Salt water can refer to a solution of water and salt. It can also refer to oceans and seas that have high salt levels dissolved. It is not advisable to drink salt water for it may cause adverse effects to a person’s health. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a cup of boiling water to make a pain killing mouthwash that also works on sore throats. Salt has a long history of being used to promote healing. Salt is an isotonic solution, which means it contains the same salt and minerals found in our body and in equal concentrations. Because of this, it does not irritate the mucus membranes a medical mouthwashes might. Salt water solutions reduce dental bacteria by temporarily increasing the PH levels in the mouth creating an alkaline environment where bacteria struggles to thrive. Bacteria and other natural species prefer acidic environment and rinsing enough regularly will hinder bacterial growth and breeding.
