8) Bernie Sanders (D)

Bernie Sanders, Senator from Vermont, grew up in Brooklyn, New York where he attended James Madison High School. He briefly attended Brooklyn College but later transferred to The University of Chicago (an interesting choice since this school is known for its politically conservative professors and curriculum). He was very politically active in college, joining the Socialist Party of America, The Young People’s Socialist League, the Congress of Racial Equality and The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He participated in the March on Washington in 1963 which was led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
